Drug treatment for heights phobia
I have found an interesting article on Medical News and other sources
about using drugs
for treatment of fear of heights
and other phobias.
A drug used to treat tuberculosis, known as D-cycloserine, was used to
support behavioral therapy using virtual reality for succesful
treatment of a fear of heights. Scientists from Emory University School
of Medicine and the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) published
the study in the November issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
The drug acts on a region of the brain known as amygdala, helping to
overcome heights phobia much more effectively than standalone therapy.
The study was conducted on 28 participants and researchers submitted a
patent for using D-cycloserine for treatment of fear of heights and
other phobias.
While, I oppose, where possible, using drugs for treatment
of fear of heights and other phobias, for some people this might
be an attractive therapy alternative.
